The history of Sacred Heart Church in Rock Creek, Ohio, is deeply rooted in the Catholic community's journey. The church's origins date back to the early 20th century when the Catholic community of Orwell was established as a mission and achieved parish status in 1922.
The first church was dedicated to St. Mary on April 1, 1925. The community's dedication to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was a life's work for St. Margaret Mary Alocoque, and her devotion was reflected in the church's name.
The community's first Mass in the new structure was held at midnight on Christmas Eve in 1959. The church's history is marked by its commitment to community service and the support of the Kujbus family, who were immigrants from Hungary.
The two communities, Sacred Heart and Saint Mary, began collaborating in 2009 and shared a pastor until they were merged on January 1, 2025, becoming Saint Margaret Mary Alocoque Parish. This merger reflects the community's shared devotion and commitment to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
